Music Instruction

I teach one-on-one and in small groups mainly  singing and piano.  Although although the people I work with have a wide range  of functioning and musical experience, my goal is always the same: as I best I can to bring out the Music I believe resides in all of them.

This means I have to be musically adaptable and not impose a musical style or approach on a student, for the approach that works for one student will not work for the next.  This is true of music teaching generally, but it is particularly true of people with special needs.  So within the last week, for example, I have taught, accompanied and coached everything from Handel arias, songs by Mahler, Beatles hits, Broadway numbers, Gershwin show-tunes, Bessie Smith blues, Appalachian folk songs, rhythm and blues numbers, etc.

Over the years I have developed my own approach which is based in learning music by ear rather than by reading.  That approach has been featured in national media, for example in this article from the New York Times.
